Shoulder Stand

The shoulder stand is one of the inverted postures which is very beneficial but, as with most movements, most of the benefits are lost if you are so tense and frightened of falling that you almost stop breathing.

A much more relaxed way of gaining confidence in this posture is to start with your feet resting on a chair (use this position in many moves)

-Make sure that you are close enough to the chair for you to hold the front legs firmly in each hand.

-Bring your feet towards the front edge of the seat (you will soon get the hang of exactly where your feet need to be to suit your body)

-Holding the chair legs firmly, slowly start to press into your heels and gently lift your seat up from the floor.

-Raise your seat up as you breathe in and gently return to the starting position as you breath out

WE ARE NOT TRYING TO BREAK WORLD RECORDS HERE - ONLY GO AS FAR AS YOU FEEL TOTALLY COMFORTABLE.

As your confidence and strength build you will find you can get higher but please take your time. This posture lengthens out the middle of the body, strengthens the muscles in the back of the legs and lower back (normally sat on) and all the inverted postures can have beneficial effects on your heart and vascular system.

* Like any exercise program, please consult your healthcare professional before you begin. Please stop immediately if any of the exercises cause pain or harm to your body.
